On-site storage, we’ve got you covered

The best way to spread holiday cheer is to sing loud for all to hear — according to Buddy the Elf anyways. If you’re not much of a singer, you can also decorate your house inside and out with these nine affordable ways to decorate for the holidays.

It’s true, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on decorations to make your home look merry and bright. The holiday season is only a month out of the year anyways, two if you like to kick things off in November. So, it shouldn’t have to cost a whole paycheck to deck the halls.

For instance, you can DIY your own garland and table centerpieces or use ribbon to add pops of color around your home, all at a reasonable price.

Of course, if you’ve already accumulated a lot of holiday décor over the years, you can also save money by reusing it for several seasons to come. And if you need a place to store it all after Jan. 1 and you live in the Greeley or Broomfield areas, check out our portable storage containers at The Box Portable Storage and request a free quote online or by calling (970) 800-3807. One of our local customer service representatives will get back to you within 24 hours about storing your things so they’re safe and out of your way.

Nonetheless, if you’re looking for more affordable ways to decorate for the holidays, check out this list of ideas and get ready to spread some real holiday cheer around your home.

1. Swap out the bulbs in your outdoor spotlights

Hanging string lights outside on the trees or from your house is a lot of work, just ask the Griswold’s. And if one bulb goes out, the whole string can go out. An easier way to add festive color outside without hanging string lights is to change out the bulbs in your outdoor spotlights with red, green or blue bulbs, or a mix.

2. Forage for pine cones and greenery to make your own garland, wreaths and more

Some of the best décor is sitting in your backyard. You can glue pine cones to string and dust them with white paint to create chic winter garland or turn fallen pine branches into a DIY wreath and vice versa. (Creative blogger and shop, Fresh Exchange, has a great how-to for making your own evergreen garland.)

3. Switch out pillow covers for something more festive

Changing out a few pillows on your couch or your bed can make a bigger difference than you’d think. For a more traditional holiday look, swap out your current pillow covers with red or green ones. For a chic winter look, use metallic and faux fur ones. And if you want to go the DIY route, use old holiday sweaters to create your own unique pillow covers.

4. Invest in a faux Christmas tree

Real Christmas trees can get pretty pricey. Instead of spending money on one each year, invest in a faux fir that you can reuse for years to come. While many are sold with the lights already attached, it’s best to get one without lights. This way, in a few years when the lights burn out or you want to change up your look with different colors, you can keep using the same tree.

5. Dress up windows with candy canes or ornament “curtains”

One affordable way to add a little holiday cheer that both you and the neighbors can enjoy is to hang candy cane “curtains” inside over your windows. To DIY, tie candy canes to ribbon and secure the other end of the ribbon to the top of the window or curtain rod. We suggest tying the candy canes at different lengths, but ultimately, it’s up to you. You can also do this with ornaments.

6. Change out photos with holiday art prints

Swapping out your photos for cute holiday prints is an easy, yet not as obvious way to decorate. You can make your own prints using wrapping paper or stamps, or shop for holiday art on Etsy that you can print out at home.

7. Use extra ornaments to add pops of color around your home

Extra ornaments? Place them in a glass bowl or vase to make a centerpiece for your kitchen table, or you can hang ornaments from a chandelier, evergreen garland or house plants.

8. Use thick ribbon to decorate outside

There are plenty of ways to use ribbon to decorate the outside of your house. You can tie it in a bow to top the pine trees, decorate fence posts or swirl it around columns on your front porch to create a candy cane-striped effect.

9. Hang holiday cards from string lights

Put your holiday cards on display by hanging them from string lights with clothespins. You can read the sweet messages and look at the photos all season long.

The most important part of decorating for the holidays, however, is that it brings you joy, whether it’s with something small like hanging up holiday cards or something big with lights, Clark Griswold-style. No matter how you plan to decorate, The Box Portable Storage wishes you and your family a happy, healthy and safe holiday season.
